Nails may become yellow stained for many reasons. The most common causes of yellow stained nails are nicotine and nail polish. Nicotine is absorbed into the nail plate while smoking. Using dark pigmented nail polish can leave a yellow stain behind if a quality nail base coat isn’t used before polishing your nails. There are a few treatments that can alleviate this problem.
- Mix a tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice to a bowl of warm water. Soak nails for 10 minutes.
- Cut a slice of lemon and rub onto nails for a few mintues. Rinse well as this burns.
- Use a nail buffer to buff away any surface stains from the nail.
- Squeeze whitening toothpaste onto an old toothbrush and brush nails for 5 minutes. Rinse.
Note that these treatments need to be repeated a few time until the stains have vanished. Invest in a good quality base coat to prevent stained nails in future….and quit smoking if possible.
